1. Background and Context Beydan Development Organization is an implementing partner of the project “Somali NGO Coalition for Better Living Conditions for Women and Marginalized Communities in Somaliland”, funded by BMZ and led by WHH. The project aims to improve the economic security, food security, resilience and participation of women and other marginalized groups through livelihood development, food-systems strengthening, vocational skills development and advocacy. Beydan is responsible for the seaweed/algae production and processing component. This component introduces seaweed cultivation as an innovative, climate-resilient livelihood and food/feed production option, builds local technical capacity, and opens opportunities for women in an emerging marine-based value chain. The project targets 230 smallholder women farmers, who will gain practical skills in seaweed cultivation, harvesting, post-harvest handling and processing. As part of this component, Beydan will establish a model seaweed production and processing facility in Berbera. The facility is planned to include: • three seaweed cultivation fields of approximately 20 × 25 metres each; • drying facilities, such as wooden racks and solar dryers; • laboratory functions for seedling production and quality control; and • basic processing equipment for seaweed-based products, including animal-feed pellets and food powder. The facility will serve as a production, demonstration and training site and, once fully operational, is expected to support annual production and processing of approximately 15–18 tons of seaweed. It will be managed by a women-led production cooperative. A core group of 30 women will receive Training of Trainers (ToT) in production, processing, quality control and facility operation, and will then transfer these skills to a further 200 women from the target communities. To ensure the facility is technically sound and sustainable, Beydan intends to engage an experienced Seaweed/Algae Technic
