Munchmuseets hovedoppgaver er å forvalte Munch-samlingen gjennom bevaring, forskning og formidling. Museet forvalter også tre andre samlinger, herunder Stenersen-samlingen.
Edvard Munch er en av modernismens viktigste kunstnere. 23. januar 1944 døde Edvard Munch i sin villa på Ekely i Oslo. Munch-samlingen rommer per i dag mer enn halvparten av Munchs malerier og de aller fleste av hans grafiske motiver.
Mytt museum åpnet i 2021 og har 750 000 besøkende per år.
