For the last 40 years, GEUS relied on in-house equipment to measure core samples' physical properties, mainly porosity, grain density, gas permeability, and Klingenberg corrected permeability, during which several new technologies emerged. The equipment was constantly modified and upgraded to deliver results that live up to GEUS’ standards. However, these modifications made the equipment very complex, not user-friendly, and only operable by a single staff member approaching his retirement age (and currently on extended leave). Additionally, the equipment suffers from several peculiarities from which frequent periodic maintenance is required increasing its operational cost and decreasing efficiency.
