GEUS intends to purchase an instrument to perform inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) in the Geochemistry Department of GEUS (also called inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, ICP-AES). This instrument can measure multiple (˃20) elements in aqueous solution simultaneously, rather than traditional single element measurements using a flame AAS. Many projects in the Geochemistry Department rely on measurements of a variety metal(loid)s in aqueous solution across a range metal(loid) concentration from a few µg/L to hundreds of mg/L. This instrument is essential to accurately detect many relevant metal(loid)s in water samples with widely varying background ionic composition (e.g., groundwater, surface water, geothermal waters, acid digestions). When equipped with specialized nebulizers, this instrument can also measure metal(loid) levels in water matrices with high salinity. In addition, we seek an instrument to measure dissolved species relatively quickly, with throughputs of roughly 4-6 minutes/sample.
