Sustainable Pig Production in Chile - Primary Production

Background and Context: In 2021, the Chilean pig-meat exports came in sixth after the EU, the US, Canada, Brazil and Mexico which advocates for a strong export oriented industry but also for the necessity of high production standards and high-quality meat products to satisfy its main customers in Asia, namely China, Japan and South Korea representing 90% of the export destinations for pig meat. TC Santiago has a strong history of collaboration with the Chilean pig meat industry - both via its trade association and directly with the main pig producers- and is well therefore positioned to cultivate even stronger ties to the benefit of Danish companies. Purpose The high efficiency and good reputation of Danish pig production is well known in Chile, but the how and the why behind the success of Danish pig-meat industry are still to be identified in Chile. Local producers often seek to benchmark with Danish standards, where currently Denmark is producing approx. 33-34 pigs per sow per year (PSY) and Chile is averaging around 30-31 PSY leaving room for improvement in many aspects of the production. The project Sustainable Pig Production in Chile – Primary Production, seeks to introduce Danish expertise in a Chilean context and identify the specific gaps where Danish companies can deliver high impact changes to resource efficiency, sustainability and environment, and animal welfare, altogether leading to less food loss and waste and more nutritious and high quality foods. Objective The main objective of this project is to audit the local pig production through site visits, business meetings and knowledge sharing events with industry stakeholders to map the challenges and opportunities of the Chilean pig industry and the possibilities this has for the Danish industry and suppliers of products, technologies and solutions.
